About Malta

A pleasant warm climate, a hospitable English speaking population, rich culture and a relatively low crime rate together with a stable and democratic political situation are definitely a rare and irresistible combination for many people intending to settle or retire indefinitely in Malta.

Malta is an archipelago of three small islands, – Malta, Gozo and Comino, with all main business taking place on the largest island, Malta. Gozo has a sizeable population but is more rural. The islands are located between Sicily and Tunis, which accounts for the almost year-round glorious weather, making sea-bathing possible for nearly seven months of the year.

Ever since the archipelago was first colonized over 5000 thousand of years ago, Malta has never been far from the center of events and has often played a crucial role in the making of history. The strategic position of the Island, in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, makes up for all the lack of resources that nature endowed the rest of the globe.

Once part of the Roman Empire, it was seized and controlled by many factions over the centuries, including Napoleon. In 1814, it became a British colony, leading to the Anglicisation of its civil administration, parliamentary procedures, law enforcement and justice. That British control ended in 1964, as Malta gained its independence. Its two official languages are Maltese and English, and many people are bilingual. A large number also speak good Italian. Malta is a member state of the European Union.

Malta’s international airport is busy with frequent and regular flight connections to all major European airports. There are sea connections to Sicily, Italy and Tunis.

The Maltese islands are also a major Mediterranean yachting base. The economy is led by tourism, financial services and information.
